Bachelor of Education (Special Needs)

This programme introduces the field of special needs education and produces teachers specializing in either hearing or visual impairment. This programme introduces the field of special needs education and produces teachers specializing in either hearing or visual impairment.


Bachelor of Education with Special Needs (BEDSN) has two specializations so far: Hearing impairment (HI) and visual impairment (VI). We train teachers for the deaf and hard of hearing or visually impaired pupils/students. This programme takes a duration of 3 years just like the Bachelor of Arts with Education. This programme has three major aspects which the students study:

  1. Deaf Education which deals with all aspects of deafness a secondary school teacher needs to effectively teach deaf learners. Or visually impaired education which prepares students to become effective teachers of the visually impaired.

  2. Educational Foundations which include curriculum studies and psychology of education that prepare a secondary school teacher to teach professionally and

  3. The teaching subject: so far the teaching subjects students select from are: Language and Linguistic, Literature, Kiswahili, Geography and History.

This website segment is for hearing impairment (HI). The development and teaching of BEDSN (HI) programme is done in partnership with the professionals from Royal Dutch Kentalis an organization from the Netherlands with specialists in Deaf Education at all educational levels and in all fields. AMUCTA is working in partnership with Royal Dutch Kentalis in the project "Teaching Deaf Learners – A pilot on innovative teaching skills in Tanzania."

  • Teaching reading English to the deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Psychological development of dear and hard of hearing students.
  • Transition and collaboration services in deaf education
  • Educational Audiology II
  • Sign Language III

Minimum Entry Requirement

Direct entry applicants

At least three O'level credit passes in approved subjects one of which must be English language.
At least two principal passes (D and above) in the appropriate Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent and must have grade point average of not less than 4.5 points where A = 5, B = 4, C = 3;D = 2,E = 1,S = 0.5,F = 0.

Applicants seeking admission under the equivalent qualifications

At least three O`level credit passes in relevant subjects one of which must be English language.
A recognized Diploma in Education with at least grade B average in the subjects they wish to study at degree level and also pass the University Entrance Examination where applicable.
